Common questions

What is the difference between an invoice and a receipt? An invoice asks for payment that has not been made yet. A receipt confirms a payment that has already happened. If the customer has already paid, you need a receipt instead.
What must a Finnish invoice include?Your name, address and Y-tunnus, the invoice date and a unique invoice number, the customer’s name and address, what you sold with quantity and price, the VAT rate and VAT amount, and the total. The tool includes all of these.
What is a reference number (viitenumero)?A number that identifies this invoice when the payment arrives. It is built from your invoice number with a check digit, so a mistyped reference is caught by the bank.
What does the bank barcode do?Finnish banking apps can scan it. The customer points their camera at it and the account, amount, reference and due date are filled in, so they cannot pay the wrong amount or forget the reference.
Can I send an invoice if I am not VAT registered?Yes. If your turnover is under €20,000 you do not have to register. Tick the not-registered option and the invoice leaves VAT out and says why.
